Buddha, Siddhartha, and the Psychology of Mindfulness

Writer: Jennifer SharplesJennifer Sharples

There was a prince named Siddhartha who had parents who gave him everything. He had wealth, beautiful women, an easy life and was protected from knowing about old age and death. Then as the prince became a bit discontented with his life he searched outside of the home and saw and old man. He soon began to wonder about old age and then about death. He realized that he did not know the truth about the world and his own experience had been really limiting. The story goes that Siddhartha left the palace and went seeking the truth. He found a tree called the Bodhi tree and meditated underneath it. Underneath this tree he became enlightened. Then he had followers who came with him and he became a teacher to teacher others the life lessons he had learned from his enlightenment experience. He became the Buddha. From meditation in Buddhism a study in psychology of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction was born. This scientifically studied mindfulness meditation and found out it was good for your mental health. There is research that if you engage in mindfulness meditation for 20 minutes daily after 45-60 days, your brain will be restructured and you will be less anxious.
